"Technophobia” as apprehension towards technology: victims, causes, and potential remedies

Imprimir PDF

ESTA ACTIVIDAD SERÁ IMPARTIDA SÓLO EN INGLÉS

In addition to having more or less realistic expectations, people often use or even just think about technology with apprehension and sometimes even with outright pre-emptive rejection. Why is this happening, and not only to the older generations? Who is most afraid of technologies that, used wisely, could probably make life easier and perhaps even promote people’s social and democratic participation? And what could be done to change things, or rather to make users more aware and able to take full advantage of the epochal innovations of the digital society? The course aims to answer these questions by retracing the main positions in the debate on the causes of “technophobia”. It will then be argued that fears for privacy or for the loss of value of human labor should be taken into consideration as triggering factors no more than the general climate of anxiety fueled by media narratives and representations. Finally, this course will examine some significant experiences implemented worldwide to counter negative sentiments towards technology, which could be replicable in other social and national contexts.
